“other” y “another”

En esta entrega vamos a ver la diferencia entre other y another.

En realidad another es una combinación del artículo an y el adjetivo other:

an + other = another

Por lo tanto, utilizamos another en las mismas situaciones en las que usaríamos a y an, es decir, antes de un sustantivo contable y singular.

Would you like a glass of wine? –> Would you like another glass of wine?

They’re going to buy a computer. –> They’re going to buy another computer.

Un error común es utilizar other en lugar de another en estas situaciones. Está claro que este vicio viene de la traducción literal del español, porque en español no se dice un otro/una otra:

¿Quieres otra copa de vino? –> Would you like other glass of wine. X

Van a comprar otro ordenador. –> They’re going to buy other computer. X

¿Cuándo utilizamos other, entonces? En cualquier situación en que no utilizaríamos a/an, por ejemplo, cuando utilizamos the, un pronombre posesivo (my, your, his, her…), some o any, y con cualquier sustantivo plural o incontable.

In this soup you can use carrots or other vegetables.

Are you free any other day of the week?

I left my cell phone in my other bag.

Ten cuidado de no utilizar another con sustantivos incontables o plurales. Por ejemplo,

There are another shops in the center. X –> There are other shops in the center.

Some people like him, and another people hate him. X –> Some people like him, and other people hate him. (¡Porque people es plural!)

Más errores con other/another:

En español utilizamos otro con el significado de uno más, y también con el significado de uno diferente. Por ejemplo,

Me encanta esta cerveza. ¡Quiero otra! (es decir, otra de la misma)

Me da asco esta cerveza ¡Quiero otra! (es decir, otra diferente)

A veces podemos utilizar other/another con el significado de uno diferente, pero en muchos casos es mejor utilizar something else, someone else o somewhere else (véase palabras olvidadas: “might”, “else” y “leave”).

Por ejemplo,

¿Quieres otra cosa? –> Do you want something else?

Pídeselo a otra persona. –> Ask someone else.

Finalmente, evita traducir otra vez por another time. En inglés tenemos una palabra muy buena para esto: again.

Se lo dije otra vez. –> I told him again. (I told him another time. X)

Another time no significa otra vez, sino otro momento, otra época o en otra ocasión.

Save it for another time. –> Guárdalo para otro momento.

One time we went to the beach. Another time we went to the mountains. –> Una vez fuimos a la playa. En otra ocasión fuimos a la montaña.

Traduce estas frases:

8. A veces como pollo, y otras veces como pescado.

9. Ese es otro problema.

10. No había otras tiendas.

11. ¿Tienes otro libro?

12. ¿Conoces otro sitio?

13. Esa es otra cosa que no entiendo.

14. Sabe hacer pasta y otras cosas sencillas.

15. ¿Quieres ver otra película?

16. Vi el otro coche.
