ORACIONES CONDICIONALES  2º TIPO 
( IMPROBABLES ) 
  Analiza las siguientes oraciones.-  
 - “ If I  save money, I will buy this car” (si ahorro dinero, compraré este coche) 
 - “ If I saved money, I would save money”  (si ahorrara dinero, compraría este coche) 
Las dos oraciones significan lo mismo. ¿Cuál es la diferencia entre ellas entonces?. Simplemente es una 
cuestión de actitud y perspectiva del interlocutor. El grado de probabilidad que se atribuye al primero 
ejemplo es bastante más alto que el segundo. 

Por tanto, es una cuestión de probabilidad.  
Observa el siguiente ejemplo. 
“If I won the lottery, I would stop working” (si ganara la lotería dejaría de trabajar) 
¿ Tendría mucho sentido decir, If I win the lottery, I will stop working” (si gano la lotería dejaré de 
trabajar)? . La respuesta es que nadie  diría esta oración, a no ser que viera que hay bastantes opciones de 
que  ocurra.  Las oraciones condicionales de 2º tipo se  forman con la correspondencia verbal Past Simple- 
Conditional Simple 
“ If she invited me, I would go to her party” (si ella me invitara, iría a su fiesta)        Past Simple*    Conditional Simple 
En el caso del verbo to be, la forma  que se emplea en la  proposición subordinada es were para todas las 
personas. 
Ej: “If he were here, I would tell him everything” 
      “ We would live at peace if we were more tolerant”  “If I were you, I would….” Esta estructura es muy habitual en inglés y se emplea para dar consejos o 
recomendaciones. Aquí de nuevo, podemos ver la forma were  referida a su sujeto de primera persona I  Además de would, existen una serie de verbos con su propias formas verbales para el tiempo condicional.  Could/ might† (podría). 
 Ej: “If you fought for it, you could get it”( si lucharas por ello, podrías conseguirlo) 
      “If you fought for it, you might  get it (si lucharas por ello, podrías conseguirlo) 

                                                 * En realidad, aunque la  proposición introducida por If tiene el verbo en pasado simple, esta forma verbal corresponde a un pretérito imperfecto de subjuntivo ( invitara o invitase). 

†  Could y might se traducen por podría, pero  could hace más bien referencia a la capacidad o habilidad, mientras que might añade el matiz  de posibilidad.
